The people behind Red Button Publishing

Nearly three decades of publishing experience

Red Button Publishing was founded in 2012 by Karen Ings and Caroline Goldsmith, two publishing professionals who believed great fiction deserved to find its readers. Between them, they brought nearly thirty years of combined experience in trade publishing and editorial development to the imprint.

Their shared conviction was simple: writing so good it simply had to be published. They sought out stories with plausible dialogue, emotional weight, and the power to make readers think, laugh, swoon, or cry.

Karen Ings

Co-founder & Commissioning Editor

Karen worked as a commissioning editor in trade publishing for fifteen years. She developed projects on a freelance basis for clients including Quercus and Penguin, experience that gave her the freedom to explore new avenues — and led her to co-found Red Button with Caroline.

She reads widely across all genres and has a sharp eye for compelling storytelling and authentic dialogue.

Consultancy Services

Red Button Publishing was built on the belief that exceptional fiction deserves to reach its audience. Founded by publishing professionals with decades of combined experience, the imprint focused on discovering stories with authentic dialogue, emotional depth, and lasting impact. Each title was chosen not for market trends but for its power to move readers. Though the imprint has ceased publishing new works, the commitment to quality storytelling remains at the heart of everything the team stood for. The five titles released during their journey reflect a dedication to craft and a love for narratives that linger long after the final page.

Beyond publishing, the team behind Red Button offered consultancy services rooted in genuine industry knowledge. Working with writers at various stages of their careers, they provided editorial guidance, manuscript assessment, and strategic advice for navigating the literary landscape. This freelance work continues to be available, drawing on the same passion for great writing that defined the imprint. Authors seeking thoughtful, experienced support can benefit from this ongoing service, which remains grounded in the belief that strong stories need skilled advocates to help them find their audience.

The decision to close the Red Button imprint was not made lightly, but the pride in what was accomplished endures. Every author supported, every title published, and every reader reached represents a meaningful contribution to contemporary fiction. The team remains passionate advocates for the written word and continues to champion the power of storytelling in new ways. For those who discovered a favourite book or author through Red Button, the legacy lives on in the pages of those five published works and in the ongoing consultancy work that carries the same spirit forward.
