Self-publishing advice from experienced publishing professionals
Our consultancy work is continuing. If you'd like guidance on self-publishing your work, our founders bring nearly three decades of combined experience in trade and digital publishing.
How We Can Help
Red Button Publishing was founded in 2012 by Karen Ings and Caroline Goldsmith. While the imprint ceased publishing new titles after June 2016, the founders' editorial consultancy work continued independently.
Both Karen and Caroline offer self-publishing advice and editorial support, drawing on their extensive backgrounds in book publishing — from commissioning and editorial development through to digital strategy.
Karen Ings previously worked as a commissioning editor for clients such as Quercus and Penguin. Caroline Goldsmith runs Caroline Goldsmith Publishing Consultancy.

For authors navigating the complex landscape of independent publishing, experienced guidance can make the difference between a manuscript that lingers and one that reaches its intended audience. The consultancy services offered draw on years of hands-on work across both traditional and digital publishing environments, providing practical advice on everything from structural editing to market positioning. Whether you are preparing your first draft or refining a nearly finished manuscript, the goal remains the same: to help you produce work that stands out for its quality and craftsmanship, while avoiding common pitfalls that can derail promising projects.
Self-publishing has evolved significantly in recent years, offering writers more control and creative freedom than ever before. Yet with that freedom comes the challenge of navigating production, distribution, and promotion without the support of a traditional publishing house. The founders of Red Button Publishing understand these challenges intimately, having guided numerous titles from concept through to publication. Their continued consultancy work reflects a lasting commitment to supporting writers at every stage of the process, ensuring that valuable stories and voices find their way into readers' hands with professionalism and care.
